1976 : The Birth of Happy Diamonds

Back in 1976, Ronald Kurowski, a talented Chopard designer, became fascinated with the sparkle of unset diamonds.

With this in mind a dream was born – to design and create a watch where diamonds could enjoy total freedom of movement.

Very quickly this dream become reality in the shape of “Happy Diamonds”.

Chopard introduced an innovative feature allowing diamonds to move freely thanks to a dial inserted between two sapphire watch crystals.

As a matter of fact, the first “Happy Diamonds” was a design concept for men. But finally, opened up the way for a new watch collection designed especially for women.

Additionally,  The HAPPY DIAMONDS avant-garde creations are representing a revolution in the field of watchmaking and jewelry.

For this reason has become an internationally acknowledged classic in its own right.

Notably for this collection is that each moving diamond is sheathed in gold from Chopard’s own foundry, designed not to scratch the sapphire crystal over which it must be able to roam freely.

For this reason, this beveled sheathing further heightens the mobility of the diamonds. Also, it enabled them to whirl like spinning tops and thus generate maximum radiance.

Nevertheless Happy Diamonds Collection is one of Chopard iconic collections.

Moreover, the Jewellery and Watches from Chopard are spreading Happiness and Joy since their creation.

Nevertheless Chopard’s latest collection presents a joyful tourbillon of simple yet bold shapes including circles, hearts, squares and good luck charms, all coupled with Chopard’s classic and elegant timepieces.

Caressing the neckline, embellishing the fingers, wrists or ears, the diamonds are moving with your gestures in a special kind of a ballet, allowing diamonds to enjoy total freedom of movement as they swirl over sapphire crystal.

The Happy Diamonds woman has a sparkle in her eye and a gift for seizing the moment. She is radiant, spontaneous and independent. Are you Happy Diamonds? Discover more pieces from the collection.

CHOPARD’S HISTORY

The company founder, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, was a Swiss watchmaker who grew up in Sonvilier a town near Bern. In 1860, he established his L.U.C manufacturing company in Sonvilier, having observed that it was more profitable to market the finished watch than to just make the mechanical movement.

After Louis-Ulysse’s death in 1915, the company was taken over by his son Paul-Louis and grandson Paul-André.

The company specialized in making pocket watches and ladies’ wristwatches.

In 1921, Paul-Louis moved the company operations to a larger town Chaux-de-Fonds in the Canton of Neuchâtel.

In 1937, at that time a company of 150 employees, the company relocated to Geneva.

This enabled the movements made by the company to be certified with the Geneva Seal.

This was a mark only applied to watch movements made in the Canton of Geneva.

By 1943, Paul-André took over the company.

Later, in 1963, having no children and wishing to continue in the business, Paul-André Chopard sold it to Karl Scheufele III, a German goldsmith and watchmaker from Pforzheim. Karl was seeking a watch movement manufacturer exclusively for his own business.

The Chopard factory moved from the center of Geneva to Meyrin-Geneva in 1974.

In 1976 the company started making watches that contained its signature free-floating diamond behind sapphire glass.

The company expansion started in 1980, by making sports watches for men and diamond jewellery for women.

Starting the year 1996, the company established its own complete watch movement manufacturing facility in Fleurier, in the Swiss Canton of Jura.

Prior to that time, all Chopard’s movements had been assembled from third party components.

The movements made in Fleurier were intended for the high end watches in the Chopard range.

Chopard celebrated it’s 150th anniversary in 2010. At the same time the company estimated revenues up to €550 million in total (of which €250 million in watches) with about 100 stores around the world.

At the present time, Chopard is one of the last family-run watchmaking and jewelry company.

Since the 1980’s, Karl and Karin’s children – Caroline and Karl-Friedriech – are very active into the company management.

For this reason, Caroline and Karl-Friedrich are Chopard’s current co-presidents.

Moreover, showing their independence, Caroline Scheufele is responsible for the ladies’ collections. She developed after all the jewellery section and later on also the high jewelry department.

In the same way, her brother Karl-Friedrich is managing the gents’ collections.

For this reason, he developed sportive watches between the 1980s and 1990s at Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, which produces the L.U.C movements.
