Foundation of the famous fabrication facility in Saint-Imier

It was the year 1832 when Auguste Agassiz opens a watch trade with fabrication in Saint-Imier – Switzerland. He opens it together with the watch dealers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. In the meantime, Agassiz starts presenting at different shows and exhibitions throughout Europe, their durable watches “in the style of Saint-Imier”.  Thus, in a short period of time, they quickly acquire quite a reputation with their watches.

Agassiz nephew, Ernest Francillon, on July 1862 takes over the fabrication facility.  After 4 years – in 1866 – they acquire some land outside the village of Saint-Imier, in the meadows of the district Langgewann (Les Longines). However, after one year – in 1867 – they built a pocket watch with the name „E. Francillon, Longines, Suisse“.

The name “Longines” is registered with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property on 27 May 1889, in order to protect it against counterfeiting. On 27 March 1893 the Longines name becomes registered at the International Intellectual Property Office and thus the Longines company becomes the oldest registered watch manufacturer in the world.

After Francillon’s death, in 1900, Longines launches their first mechanical attachment watches for ladies in 1903. Thus, two years later follows the first mechanically produced wristwatch which replaces the pocket watch in 1919.
