In the first place, on the eve of the Second World War, Panerai creates the first prototypes of the model now known as “Radiomir” for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command of the Royal Italian Navy. Moreover, the Panerai’s history always linked with the supply of instruments and equipment to the Royal Italian Navy and also the supply of a suitable watch for the Italian Navy that led to the creation of the original Radiomir in 1938. In fact, the Radiomir name comes from the luminous substance used on the dial. Finally, they replaced it with  “Luminor”, an alternative substance, which also leads to another brand name synonymous with Panerai.

The Movement – Panerai Caliber  P.4000

Officine Panerai’s first automatic movement with an off-center micro-rotor completely developed and also made in the Panerai Manufacture at Neuchâtel. Nevertheless, this is a marvelous mechanism. Therefore, this new movement impliesn imply that the rotor comes mounted off-center and therefore becomes smaller in diameter than the caliber itself. In fact is a sophisticated technical solution enabling the thickness of the movement to be substantially reduced. Moreover, the small oscillating weight comes also inserted within the movement rather than superimposed upon it and the result is a calibre which preserves all the Panerai characteristics of accuracy, reliability and also solidity but with only a thickness of 3.95 mm.
